The Time-Sensitive Networking Testbed (TSN) of LNI 4.0
What is TSN?
TSN stands for Time-Sensitive Networking and enables real-time communication via Ethernet, the physical network that transports the Internet, and is therefore essential for networked production.
TSN is therefore part of Industry 4.0, as it enables the control of data packets in Ethernet networks in a controlled manner. Data packets are normally transmitted according to the "best effort" principle, with TSN it works like the "registered letter with return receipt" principle of the postal service. And as a helpful side effect, the data has a very precise time stamp, which is very useful for traceability.

Why is TSN so important?
TSN ensures that data packets arrive reliably and on time. This is essential for the smooth operation of production lines. This technology makes it possible to link different machines and systems in a production environment efficiently and precisely.
TSN is standardized by the global standardization organization IEEE. This is the IEEE802.1 standard family, which in turn has various sub-standards, each of which fulfills different functions.
For example: A standard is time synchronization on the Ethernet data connection. This means that the exact same time is available everywhere. Data packets can be controlled and distributed very precisely via this time synchronization.
In production, this means that all machines, sensors and systems communicate seamlessly and efficiently with each other.
A production line works with a large number of machines, all of which need to be coordinated with each other precisely and on time. Any time a signal from a machine arrives late, this could lead to delays and therefore production errors. TSN solves this problem by ensuring that important data packets have priority and always arrive at their destination at the scheduled time.

Objectives of the TSN testbed for LNI 4.0
In this testbed, international experts from global companies work together to test and optimize the interoperability and functionality of TSN implementations based on the IEEE family of standards.
The companies in the various countries work on the topics in different functions.
Through close cooperation with IEEE, the LNI 4.0 TSN Testbed provides valuable feedback for the further development and improvement of the IEEE TSN standards. This ensures that the prototype solutions developed at an early stage not only meet the current standard requirements, but are also future-proof and investment-proof.
Another key advantage of the TSN testbed is the organization of plugfests. This is where manufacturers test their prototypes and implementations under real conditions. The tests are requested and characterized by real use cases of the SME members. These tests enable companies to test the compatibility of their prototype products with those of other manufacturers and to identify and rectify any problems in the products at an early stage.
By participating in the TSN Testbed, companies benefit from:
- Early insights into new developments and IEEE standards
- Valuable feedback to improve their own products
- Networking opportunities with leading experts and other companies
- The opportunity to test their technologies pre-competitively in a neutral and realistic environment
The TSN Testbed therefore acts as a catalyst for innovation and plays a key role in making the Industry 4.0 vision a reality.
